James L. DeBenedetti died peacefully among family and friends Monday, April 14, after a four-year battle with cancer; he was 53.

A Native of Concord, at the age of 18 he enlisted in the Navy and served in Vietnam. He later graduated from the University of California, San Diego, with a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering. He began his career as a systems test engineer for Lockheed Martin, and over his 20 years with the company he worked as the director of the eastern test range in Cape Canaveral, Flor., and as the director of the PLV program in Sunnyvale.

Mr. DeBenedetti was preceded in death by parents Harold and Ida Mae DeBenedetti and brother Steven H. DeBenedetti. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Mary A. DeBenedetti of Gilroy; sons Joseph H. DeBenedetti and Anthony L. DeBenedetti, both of Gilroy; daughter Maria A. DeBenedetti of Irvine; and his niece Anna F. DeBenedetti of Three Rivers.

Visitation will begin Monday at 1 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Funeral Services will be at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Concord. The family would appreciate contributions to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
