The boys’ freshman baseball team started off this week on a good note against Carmel High School, winning a close game 9-8. Although the Mustangs have had some trouble batting in runs this season, they managed to pull the game out helped by the offensive exploits of Matt Elston and Cory Snyder. Max Fishler started on the mound for the Mustangs, and was relieved by closer Jordan Holler.

“Our hitting has not been that well,” said team member Nick Marra, “but the last couple of games we have gotten a lot better.”

The JV softball team had a big game against longtime rival San Benito, whipping the Haybalers 7-1. With the help of freshman Alissa Castro (4 for 4), sophomore Emily Castro (3 for 4) and freshman Michaela Motch (triple), the Mustangs were swinging the bat well. Sophomore Ashley Harrington came up big on the mound, finishing the game with thirteen strikeouts.

“They [Balers] had a few errors at third and short,” said Harrington, “but we mostly hit in the gaps and played really good defense.”

The freshmen softball squad was not as successful as the junior varsity, dropping a 14-2 decision to San Benito on Tuesday afternoon. Neither Brenna O’Neill nor Marisa Gamboa could stop the Balers from hitting and scoring runs. With the loss, the freshmen girls are 2-7.

Salinas was no match for the JV boys’ volleyball team. Using hard hits and excellent passes, the Mustangs swept the Cowboys 25-14, 25-14. Gilroy finished the first half of TCAL with a 6-1 record, trailing only Monterey.

The JV golf squad hosted Aptos High School on Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Ridge Golf Course. Chris Martinez shot the lowest score of 47 for the Mustangs. But Martinez’s effort was not enough to get the win Gilroy, who lost the match 234-268. This loss brings the boys’ record to 4-4 for the season.

In a JV gymnastics meet Thursday with Los Altos and Cupertino, Kyla Loving-Scott took first all-around with a 36.6. Katie Kishimura took third all-around with 33.95. Savannah Dalkey was second on bars with 8.8. Shannon Hubbard was second on vault with 9.05.
