against Valley Christian, coming out on the short end of a 58-54
decision.

Gilroy – The Gilroy boys JV basketball team had its opener Tuesday against Valley Christian, coming out on the short end of a 58-54 decision.

Kendrick Azcueta had 20 points to lead the Mustangs. He was backed by Justin Wheat with 12 points. Neal Azcueta and Jordan Cania added eight points apiece. The freshmen lost their game against Valley Christian, 56-30.

The JV boys are at San Benito High School for a tournament this weekend.

The girls JV team is off to a fast start with two decisive wins in its first two games. Gilroy beat Live Oak 36-12 in its opener, and the overcame a slow start to easily defeat Watsonville 63-18 in the opening round of the Mustang Classic.

GHS trailed 8-7 midway through the first quarter Thursday against the Wildcatz before turning to fullcourt pressure as the Mustangs closed the first half with an amazing 34-2 run. Center Carmen Pichardo led Gilroy with 19 points and six rebounds. Jennifer Rose had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Mustangs had a 41-12 advantage in rebounds and had 15 steals.

The Junior Varsity Wrestling team left Friday afternoon for a tournament at Sobrato High School.

The boys JV Soccer team took third place in the Watsonville tournament over Thanksgiving break. Last Saturday the Mustangs came out on top of Soquel, 5-4. Defenders Joseph Souza, Brian Salazar, Ivan Lopez and Ramiro Diaz helped the team to victory.

“I think the team did pretty good,” said team captain John Paul Sanchez. “There is still room for improvement.”
