The Gilroy girls’ basketball team came up with a solid effort Tuesday in its 38-28 win over San Benito at Bob Hagen Memorial Gym.
Carmen Pichardo led the Mustangs with 13 points. Breana Mah added 11 points and Alana Osaki had six.
“All the girls played really well together as a team,” said GHS co-coach Antoinette Bowe.
The freshman girls also earned their 13th win in 14 decisions by slipping past the Haybalers, 18-11. Gilroy had its lowest scoring game of the season but was still able to pull out the win. Angel Senior scored seven points to lead the Mustangs with Laura Steele following with four.
“Our shots didn’t fall like they usually do,” co-coach Melissa Noto said. Her dad and co-coach, Benjie Noto, added, “But by being in shape, our defense saved us in the end.”
The girls JV soccer team came up with a 1-0 win Saturday over San Benito. Cassandra Kachakji scored the lone goal.
Kachakji, the team’s leading scorer, also helped the Mustangs gain a 3-0 win over Notre Dame on Wednesday with a goal. Miriam Escalera had a goal as well and an assist to Yesenia Urias, who contributed the third goal. The team is now 7-1-1 and faces North Salinas at noon today at Garcia-Elder Complex.
The Boys JV soccer team dominated Palma in a 4-0 win. Hector Salgado had two goals for the Mustangs. Braulio Pineda and Matt Elston contributed one goal apiece.
The wrestling team’s match Thursday at Salinas featured only four bouts. Gilroy won three of the bouts. Nick Ahmadkhani and Luis Barragan had pins. JVs Martin Espinoza and Adam Rosso were brought up to wrestle on varsity for the match and were pinned.
