1. Thumbs up for a committee that, given a tough job, did its homework

After due consideration, it’s clear the superintendent’s committee – given the nasty job of drawing boundary lines for Gilroy and Christopher high schools – has done a yeoman’s job. Our recommendation to the Gilroy Unified School District Board is to leave the boundary line as proposed exactly where it is.

It’s not a question of blindly supporting the committee’s efforts, but rather taking a rational look at what they did and giving it a thumbs up.

The only real criticism being hurled comes from a pocket of parents whose children attend Luigi Aprea Elementary School. One of the boundary lines divides Mantelli Drive and some families in the Luigi Aprea School boundaries would head for Gilroy High, while most would be going to Christopher High School.

2. The thing about boundaries is that someone is always unhappy

That’s the thing about boundaries – someone’s not going to be completely satisfied. The Mantelli Drive border makes sense in three ways – geographically, demographically and it makes common sense in that it is a recognizable and clear dividing line.

If the board opts to gerrymander the border to keep all Luigi Aprea students at the same high school it will necessitate busing students north of the Luigi Aprea boundary all the way to Gilroy High. That makes no sense.

3. Plenty of pressing issues for the board – make the call and move on

It’s worth noting, too, that Christopher High for the forseeable future won’t be able to support a full advance placement studies program. The point being that there are strengths that will stay with Gilroy High which are simply in the numbers as CHS ramps up for the first few years.

The committee came to a unanimous choice for the border. It’s a good one. There are other important matters for the board to attend to. This decision should be made without delay and with a clear conscience.
