Dear Editor:
Last Friday, in the article entitled, “Full-court Parent Press,” The Dispatch chose to publish the names of four English teachers who “will be let go at the end of this school year.”
On behalf of those teachers and future teachers who might find themselves in a similar situation, I am asking The Dispatch to stop such a practice. This was a gross invasion of privacy and, hopefully, will not adversely affect their chances of gaining future employment in this field.
If a teacher chooses to make her employment status public, that is her choice and her right. For the newspaper to publish the names of others without first obtaining their permission is inexcusable.
We may never know the true reasons the district makes these decisions, but from my experience, it often has nothing to do with performance or how good the teacher is in the classroom, and that’s unfortunate.
Once again, I ask you to please consider the consequences of your actions.

EDITOR’S NOTE: It has not been our routine practice to publish the names of teachers who are not being re-hired. In this case, however, given the ongoing controversy surrounding the English Department at Gilroy High School and the significant number of teachers involved within one department, we decided that it was important for public understanding to report which teachers were let go.
