Gilroy – Police arrested a Huron man Thursday who they suspect briefly kidnapped his former girlfriend’s sister and later made his way to Gilroy with the intent of beating up the former girlfriend.

Before his arrest, though, 19-year-old Jose Alberto Herrera walked or at times hitch-hiked from U.S. Highway 152 east of Casa de Fruta, where his car overheated, to Gilroy.

Herrera in Huron kidnapped the 15-year-old sister of a former girlfriend, who lives in Gilroy, police said. The woman told police Herrera took her sister with the intent of having her call the woman, police said. Herrera later let the 15-year-old go, and made threats to kill the Gilroy woman and her family.

The woman contacted Gilroy police because she believed Herrera was on his way to Gilroy to harm her.

Herrera was taken into custody at Kern Avenue and Culp Drive about 1:36pm, on suspicion of kidnapping and making terrorist threats, both felonies.

He and a friend had left Herrera’s car on the side of Pacheco Pass Highway earlier in the day because it kept overheating.

His car was later located by the California Highway Patrol.
