Local champion fights for ninth time this years at Legends
Casino in Yacama
YACAMA, Wash. – With a 7-1 record in 2003, world champion Kelsey ‘The Road Warrior’ Jeffries heads to Yacama, Washington for a six-round bout against Seattle’s Carla Wilcox (4-3, 2 KOs) on Friday night at Legends Casino.
Jeffries, who holds four championship belts, does not know much about her next opponent, but the garlic-trained brawler likes it better that way.
“I think it’s even better that way because I prepare for anything. I’m ready for anything from A to Z, said Jeffries from her hotel room in Yacama. “She really thinks she’s going to beat me. I don’t know her style. I just know she fought for a world title in Korea and lost.”
Jeffries hopes to make quick work of Wilcox, since she has to drive three hours to Portland and jump on a plane back to Gilroy for her fire academy finals on Saturday and Sunday. She hopes to become a firefighter in either Gilroy or Hollister.
“(Fire training) helps out. It helps me take my mind off the fight so I’m not thinking about it all the time,” Jeffries said. “I’m studying up here. It relaxes me.”
Jeffries maintains a 23-8 record with one knockout and wants to keep on fighting until she wins another world title.
“I’d like to get the 122-pound belt and then move up to 126 or 130, anything is possible. There are a lot of girls out there who want to fight,” said Jeffries, whose focus remains on Wilcox. “I’m ready for anything. I’m ready for a fight. I’m not taken anyone lightly, especially since she thinks she can beat me.
“She’s a little girls so I have to be fast and use my head and jab a lot. Definitley work the body. That’s been my claim to fame. I’m going to stick to the body.”
