About a dozen deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Asian Gang Team arrested the owner of Furniture Revolution after searching his business and San Martin home.
Hai Tran is not a member of an Asian gang and “is being very helpful and cooperative” in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s investigation of crimes that occurred in their jurisdiction, said Lt. Doug Fetteroll. He would not say what the alleged crimes were, only that his team is investigating a dispute over a six-figure sum of money that could turn out to be a civil matter.
“The conduct that occurred was criminal,” Fetteroll said. “I don’t believe (Tran) was principal but he may be related. He’s not the person who directly committed the alleged crimes but there may be some involvement.”
Police are trying to decipher whether the crimes that occurred are gang-related, Fetteroll said.
The deputies drove up from Los Angeles this morning in several unmarked, gray police cars and will return later today, taking Tran with them. He will be booked in Los Angeles County.
Although deputies searched both Tran’s home and business, Fetteroll would not say what they were looking for or what they recovered. Tran’s employees and family are not involved in the investigation, he said.
When Jaime Rosso, the owner of Rosso’s Furniture, pulled into work about 9 a.m., he noticed two deputies parked in front of his store watching Furniture Revolution, which is just across Monterey Street from Rosso’s. Several unmarked cars converged on the business soon after and spent nearly the entire morning and afternoon going in and out of the business.
Rosso said Tran was involved in multiple businesses around the Bay Area.
“He has his hands in a lot of different businesses, the specifics of which, I don’t know,” Rosso said. “He has been a very difficult person to work with.”
In 2003, Tran opened the furniture store at the corner of Monterey and 10th streets. About the same time, Tran was sued by the landlord of his 5 Day Furniture Warehouse on Luchessa Avenue after Tran inquired about breaking the 10-year lease.
