Gilroy – The Gilroy girls soccer team put there undefeated TCAL record (3-0) on the line at home Thursday when they hosted Salinas. And the Lady Mustangs escaped with that undefeated record still in tact.

But just barely.

Gilroy managed to rally late in the game, off the foot of Joann Olivio Pedrozza, for the team’s lone goal, which tied the score 1-1. And that’s the way the contest ended.

“It was a matter of League pride,” head coach Jose Hernandez reiterated. “They (Salinas) have always been one of those teams that seems to give us fits. They always come to play and they did so (Thursday) as well.”

With 18 minutes left in the second half Salinas scored the game’s first goal on a wild scramble for the ball. But the Lady Mustangs held tough and when the opening presented itself they squeaked out the game-tying goal.

“We’re still the only undefeated team left in TCAL but North Salinas has one more win than us. We’ve given them their only loss in league,” Hernandez said. “Tonight’s game was a great learning experience because Salinas came out aggressive and we had to adjust to their level of play. This is a reminder to our team that we have to treat each opponent seriously and not take anyone for granted.

“Hustle is what wins games and they out hustled us tonight,” he admitted. “That is until the last five minutes.”

Hernandez was quick to mention the play of Brittney Barnes who “played hard for the second straight game. She provides us with a lot of structure.”

The Lady Mustangs will look to improve on their undefeated league record when the travel to Sobrato on Tuesday.
