Garcia scores two of three straight Gilroy High goals to blow
past RLS in 3-2 victory
MONTEREY – The Lady Mustang stickhandlers netted three goals in the final 10 minutes of Friday’s road clash against RLS to erase a two-goal deficit and complete a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
“It was a great, great, great, great game,” head coach Adam Gemar said. “Our girls regrouped and just showed a lot of character and scored three goals within seven minutes to win the game.”
After RLS broke out the scoreless tie with two consecutive goals in the second half, the Lady Mustangs shifted into another gear. Senior wing Maday Garcia started the spark with a goal off a short corner. Then forward Selida Banuelas’s game-tying goal was generated from a steal in the attack zone by teammate Karlie Sandoval.
“Karlie jumped in real hard, poked the ball away from the defender, rolled it to Selida, and she slammed it into the back of the net,” Gemar said.
Suddenly, it was a whole new ball game.
The Lady Mustangs completed the comeback when Garcia scored her second goal of the game – this time finishing off a cross from senior wing Tracy Link.
“Maday put it top shelf – which was another great goal,” Gemar said. “All our goals were pretty and came with some flurry. We had an outstanding game.”
Gilroy – which converted on one of 11 short corners – put 15 shots on net compared to eight by RLS.
“We showed way more character than I’ve ever seen,” Gemar said. “They proved they are a really good team.”
Up next, the Lady Mustangs will host Santa Catalina on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
