Dear Editor,
I quote from a letter to the editor submitted from a
21-year-old.

These kids by all accounts sound to have been good kids.

This statement really puzzles me.
What constitutes a bad kid? Is stealing a car and jewelry the
act of a good kid? I do not know these kids or their families
personally and I am sure they were not evil and all had their good
side. However, in my opinion

Dear Editor,

I quote from a letter to the editor submitted from a 21-year-old. “These kids by all accounts sound to have been good kids.” This statement really puzzles me.

What constitutes a bad kid? Is stealing a car and jewelry the act of a good kid? I do not know these kids or their families personally and I am sure they were not evil and all had their good side. However, in my opinion “good kids” do not steal cars and jewelry.

“Good kids” do not go on joyrides in a stolen vehicle at 10:30pm on a school night or any other time. “Good kids” do not run from the police since they would not have reason to. They made some very poor judgments and paid the ultimate price. Unfortunately, they did not stop and accept the consequences of their actions.

I do feel very sad for the families that must live with this loss. I know what it is like to lose a child – it’s the worst thing that could ever happen to a parent. These kids were, young, misguided, immature and in need of much positive guidance and supervision. They could have benefited had they had something constructive to keep them occupied during their “free time.”

Unfortunately in the present culture and society we live in many young children and teenagers go unsupervised due to economic circumstances that does not allow for a stay-at-home parent. Children much too young are often left to make their own daily decisions and parents may never know what goes on when they are not there until such an unfortunate accident as this one. No one deserves to die in such a horrible way.
