Dear Editor,
South County Derby Girls want to introduce the sport of Flat Track Roller Derby to Gilroy! Roller derby is making a comeback in a big way and for a lot of reasons.
We are a growing team and would love new skaters, refs, and volunteers to come and check us out. What is so great is that we take all skill levels and will even teach you how to skate!
I started skating with the team in August, it was formed in April of 2010, and I absolutely love it. It is a great cardio and leg workout that is so much fun. We practice three times a week for two hours each session. The ladies on the team are great and we have a blast together on and off of skates. You might remember seeing us in the Holiday Parade downtown – we were the crazies wearing tutus and skating in the rain. I have to say I never saw myself doing that.
All you have to do is contact us (e-mail at ad***@so*******************.org or call 408-634-TEAM), come watch a practice, try it out with some of our loaner gear and then, if you decide to join, you get to come up with an awesome derby name. I went with Smashin Smeesha and we also have a Chris My Grits, Bullet Sucker, Hatchet, LaLa Lollipop, and lots of other awesome ladies that skate.
Roller Derby has done so much for me, I’m a stay-at-home mom with two boys and it is the best me time I have ever had. I hope that more ladies in the community will come and give it a try, I promise they will surprise themselves.
