In response to “Gilroy needs accessible mattress disposal site” (Gilroy Dispatch, Letters, Jan. 8), The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program shares the author’s enthusiasm for establishing a permanent collection site in the city. Our staff is working diligently to make this possible and recently met with city staff to discuss establishing collection events.

However, in the meantime, there are no-cost mattress disposal options available to residents that were not mentioned in the letter.

First, there is access to the program through Recology South Valley. It provides Gilroy and Morgan Hill residents with two free vouchers per year to drop off any bulky item, including mattresses, at the San Martin Transfer Station.

Second, when buying a new mattress and having it delivered, residents should request the retailer take the old one back. By California law all retailers—even online companies—must offer to take back an old mattress at no extra cost at the time of delivery of new units. Most retailers have adapted their delivery and take back processes during the pandemic, so it is worthwhile to discuss take back with your sales representative during your purchase.

MRC values creating a collection network all Californians can access, including those in the South Bay. Visit ByeByeMattress.com or follow @ByeByeMattress on Facebook and Twitter to learn about upcoming events and new site announcements.
