DEAR EDITOR:
April Manns, a healthcare worker from Fremont happened to read a recent column and was incensed by it and what she called my lack of research before “spewing my venom.”
I don’t know how healthcare workers from Gilroy felt about the column in which I compared my late night visit to the St. Louise ER to a visit to the Land of Oz, but I certainly meant no criticism of their dedication and hard work. Those who read my column on a regular basis know I would never trash the reputation of anyone who serves others. But Ms. Mann was reading me out of context and is not a regular subscriber.
Several friends of mine are nurses, and I have great respect for them. I also admire the many wonderful volunteers, such as Vi Taylor and the great work she does at the hospital. But come on, don’t I have the right to take what was for me a very scary experience of visiting the hospital ER for the first time alone and late at night – and look for the humor in a dark situation?
Isn’t that the best way to handle fear and embarrassment? Lighten up, Ms. Manns; it was a satire. It was a Halloween story, not fact-finding journalism. Next time, try not to check your sense of humor at the door.
P.S. Watch for future stories of the great work being done at St. Louise.
