Dear Editor:

I have been with Gilroy Little league since 1985, my children have participated, and now my grandchildren are involved. Our entire family has been involved with this organization since then, and what has happened during this season has been very upsetting.

This has to do with the coaches and parents. What I have seen during the season would even upset the major league baseball commissioner.

First of all there are the incidents of coaches harrasing the umpires and the players – and the league president isn’t doing anything about it.

To my knowledge the umpire has the authority to call the games. I have seen coaches and parents out of control in at least five games during which they are trying to tell the umpire how to run the game.

Out of frustration the umpire calls the game to avoid any confrontations and to make sure the players are safe – only to be humiliated in front of the parents and coaches because parents had called and whined about what they felt the umpire did wrong. The umpires should be backed up. Everyone wonders why no one wants to volunteer, its because when there is a controversy there is no support from the board of directors.

Well, it’s time to bite the bullet and tell these coaches and parents to stop their whining and LET THE CHILDREN PLAY. This is Little League not major league baseball. If you don’t, then a lot of parents will be taking their children out of Gilroy Little League and moving them to PONY league or to the traveling teams just so that each children can have fun.

Parents, coaches, grandparents, board members, umpires and fans … Let’s go back to the basics and remember its time to let these KIDS PLAY AND HAVE FUN!!
