Now the 15-year-old Gilroy High student can call himself a 2010 Silver Gloves National Champion.

Advancing through tournaments that began back in November, Gomez, who fights out of Left to Right boxing gym in San Martin, was rewarded for his hard work, going 3-0 at the championships held in Missouri to capture the 165-pound division.

“He worked really hard for this,” Gomez’s trainer and coach Jerry Rodriguez wrote in an e-mail.

Gomez defeated Junior Younan out of New York in the finals.

” I told Ceasar he can do it,” Rodriguez wrote. “He is a strong natural 165 pounder. Pressure was our game plan; body to the head, staying right in his face, giving no room.”

Gomez had to win two fights leading up to the finals, first beating Shayaa Berri then knocking off Bryant Zamora of Florida.

Gomez represented Region 8 which consists of California, Hawaii, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona

On the road to the nationals, Gomez earned both state and regional championships.
