Hearing for murder suspect continued
San Martin – A Tuesday hearing for the suspect in the murder of a 19-year-old Gilroy man was continued to Friday at 9am.
Anthony J. Frausto, 18, of Morgan Hill is the leading suspect in the shooting death of Luis Santos Bautista, who was killed during a reputed gang attack Sept. 30 behind the Safeway grocery store in the Tennant Station shopping center in Morgan Hill.
Frausto, who is being held in the Santa Clara County Jail without bail, was arrested Oct. 2 after telling police he came in to the Morgan Hill Police station to “clear his name” when he heard police were looking for him.
Two alleged accomplices in the homicide are still at large, according to police.
Senators demand catastrophe plan
Washington – California’s Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer urged president George W. Bush to release the administration’s catastrophe plan for California.
In a letter delivered Wednesday, the second from Boxer, the senators urged the president to release the plan and questioned its existence.
Former workers invited to ceremony
Gilroy – Former employees and local residents are invited to an open house at 6pm, Thursday, at the former Cannery site, at the corner of Lewis and Alexander streets. The event is intended to reunite cannery employees and expose residents to a future housing and commercial project slated for the site. The event is sponsored by the nonprofit South County Housing Corporation.

Plans cued for local comment
Gilroy – Planning commissioners will hold a public hearing at 7pm, Thursday, at City Hall’s council chambers, 7351 Rosanna St., to accept comments on two major planning documents. Residents will have the chance to comment on new planning guidelines for the downtown area, and on a proposed agreement between the city and developers of the Glen Loma Ranch project, a mini-city planned for Gilroy’s southwestern quadrant.
The agreement will allow the developers to build 1,700 homes at a quicker pace in exchange for covering the costs of a new firehouse and two parks and moving up the construction schedule of a 10th Street Bridge.

Council signs off on Glen Loma
Gilroy – Council members Thursday unanimously signed off on an environmental impact report, zone change, and specific plan governing the Glen Loma Ranch project, a 1,700-unit development slated for construction in southwest Gilroy during the next decade. In November, council will review a development agreement that would allow the Glen Loma developers to construct homes at a quicker pace. In exchange, the developers would pay for a new fire station and two parks and move up the construction schedule of a 10th Street Bridge.
Wienerschnitzel helps raise funds
Gilroy – The local hot dog restaurant Wienerschnitzel will help raise funds for the nonprofit organization Heart to Heart with Ukraine all day Oct. 26, 711 First St. The event is open to everyone. There will be food, prizes, a jump house and the appearance by the Famous Weiner Dog. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of funds raised to benefit orphans from Ukraine. Some of the children are in the process of being adopted by Gilroy and Morgan Hill families. Corporate sponsors are welcome.
