‘Blood Wedding’ on stage Thursday
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Theatre Arts’ department will perform “Blood Wedding” Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All performances begin at 8pm in the college theater at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
The play, written by Frederico Garcia Lorca, is set in Madrid, Spain circa 1933 and based on a true story of love, lust and betrayal. Lorca wrote “Blood Wedding” years after reading a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day to escape with her childhood sweetheart.
General admission is $12, $8 for children and seniors and $10 for students.

Elks Lodge installs officers
Gilroy – Elks Lodge #1567 held it’s installation of officers for the Lodge year 2006-2007 on March 26. Incoming Exalted Ruler, Gerald Brearton took over the administration of the affair for the Lodge April 1.
Each year the Lodge elects a new set of officers to handle the affairs of the coming year. This year’s officers are Exalted Ruler, Gerald Brearton; Esteemed Leading Knight, Wayne Weller; Esteemed Loyal Knight, Warren Blakley; Esteemed Lecturing Knight, Aruther Gillespie;
Secretary, W. John Filice; Treasurer, John W. Scherrer; Chaplain, Phil Quast; Ommer Giard. Steven Woods; Tiler, Steven Beck; Esquire, Harry W. Albert.
Joining the four sitting trustees (John Sorci, Jan Males, Chuck Dillmann, and Jerry Everman) will be Michael Smart for his first year of a five year term.
Awards were also presented to Wayne Weller (Officer of the Year), Charles Rusciano (Elk of the Year), Cora Carbonel (Elks Lady of the Year), and Don Christopher (Citizen of the Year).

Scholarships for bilingual students
Gilroy – Seventy-five $2,000 scholarships are available for Spanish-speaking, bicultural high-school students who want to pursue careers in the health care industry.
The scholarships are offered on behalf of the UnitedHealthcare Latino Health Scholars program, which helps educate and encourage Hispanic and Latino students to pursue career opportunities in health care.Â
High-school seniors with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and who are fluent in Spanish and English are eligible. Applicants must show proof of acceptance into a university, community college or accredited technical college and must be enrolled in an approved health care program at the time they receive the scholarship. Applications are due May 29.

Learn to Tango
Gilroy – Tango Fantástico of Morgan Hill has responded to the local demand for more social dance classes. Already under way in Morgan Hill, they are now bringing a beginners class “An Introduction to Argentine Tango – Basic Elements” to Gilroy. The first class of an eight-week course will take place on Wednesday, at Studio Three, 7996 Westwood Drive.

Gilroy – The library has free resources to help taxpayers get their paperwork in order for the April 17 filing deadline.
A wide variety of how-to books on tax preparation and financial planning strategies are available along with State and Federal tax forms. The Electronic Library 24/7 provides quick links to Web sites with online tax code, rates, forms and information for both the Internal Revenue Service and the Franchise Tax Board.

Conservative Republicans meet
Morgan Hill – Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly (CRA) on Thursday, April 6, at 7pm. Meet at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, 17035 Condit Road. This will be a candidate endorsement meeting. The objective of our local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in our state and our country.
SV Symphony Concert Saturday
San Juan Bautista – The South Valley Symphony will perform a concert at historic San Juan Bautista Mission on Saturday, April 8, at 8pm.
Maestro Henry Mollicone will once again lead the orchestra in a program of old and new selections of the classical music repertoire. The concert will lead off with Symphony in C Major by the French Compose George Bizet. Following a brief intermission, the orchestra will perform the St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Hoist.
Guest saxophone soloist William Trimble will appear with the orchestra in a performance of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra by Marcello and conclude the program with the Choral Varie D’Indy.
