Caltrain fares increase Jan. 1

Gilroy – Caltrain will implement a 5.6 percent increase to its base fare beginning Jan. 1. The base fare for a one-way ticket will increase by 25 cents. Zone charges will not go up.

This is the second of a two-phased fare increase which was approved by the Caltrain policy board last spring to address the railroad’s significant budget shortfall, which has been further exacerbated by higher fuel costs.

The 5.6 percent increase is expected to raise $600,000 during the remaining six months in the current fiscal year, or $1.2 million annually. The increase will be reflected in the price of all tickets except the Senior/Disabled/Youth one-way fare, which remains unchanged. Caltrain shortly will issue a new schedule with the updated fares. Train times will not change.

Search for cannery workers continues

Gilroy – Did you work at the old Gilroy cannery for a summer? A year? A decade? We would like to hear your stories!

As part of a redevelopment project, South County Housing Corporation has launched the Cannery History Project. This project, in conjunction with the Gavilan College History Department, will employ Gavilan students to gather, preserve and share human histories of Gilroy’s cannery community.

SCH has purchased the site in downtown and plans a mixed-use development of approximately 210 residential units and 40,000 square feet of office, food service and retail space.

Rather than losing the history when the buildings are replaced, SCH wishes to make the stories of people who worked at the cannery known.
