Beefmobile swings through South Valley

Aromas – The beefmobile swung through the 101 Livestock Market in Aromas recently to educate cattle producers about how their “beef checkoff” fees are used. The checkoff program assesses a $1 fee for every head of cattle sold.

The money is used for beef education and promotion programs. The beefmobile also delivers beef safety and nutrition information, and recipes, the ranchers and consumers. Throughout the year, the beefmobile will make 90 stops across the country.

Sex offender list available in 12 languages

Sacramento – The state’s Web site that offers the names, location and personal information of 63,000 convicted sex offenders is now available in 12 different languages.

The site, www.MegansLaw.ca.gov, can now be searched in English, Spanish, Arabic, Armenian, Japanese, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Maintained by the California Attorney General’s office, the site includes registrants’ gender, race, physical description – weight, height, scars, tattoos – and a listing of their criminal convictions.

Names, aliases, counties and ZIP codes for registrants will still be provided in English only.

Volunteers needed to clean creeks

Gilroy – Volunteers are needed to help clean Gilroy’s creeks Saturday as part of the 21st annual Coastal Cleanup Day. Last year 1,100 volunteers removed 31,000 pounds of trash and debris from Santa Clara County creeks, This year, there are three Gilroy locations: Coyote Lake, Uvas Creek at the entrance to Christmas Hill Park and Uvas Creek at the intersection of Miller Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard. Gilroy residents may also throw away as many as four tires at the Miller Avenue location. Volunteers should arrive at 9am wearing long pants and sturdy shoes. All materials and snacks will be provided. The event lasts three hours.

‘Don’t Trash California’ kicks off

Gilroy – Police and Caltrans kicked off a campaign Thursday to keep litter off local freeways.

Caltrans will be collecting litter in orange bags, to display them at different sites where they will be visible to freeway drivers.

California Highway Patrol officers will make a special effort to find and cite drivers who litter, which is a violation of the California Vehicle Code and can carry a fine of up to $1,000.

Litter on highways poses a safety risk to motorists and the environment, and often has a direct relation to traffic accidents and freeway congestion, according to Caltrans.

South Valley Symphony season

Gilroy – South Valley Symphony will perform a series of five concerts and also host a jazz concert scheduled for March 18, 2006 at the newly finished theater located at the Ann Sobrato High School theater in Morgan Hill in its 32nd season. A mariachi concert is also scheduled for May 5 at St. Mary Parish in Gilroy.

Season ticket prices for adults are $90 for the series of seven concerts and also will include a wine and cheese tasting event scheduled for the Pops concert at Bonfante Gardens Friday, June 2 at 7:30pm. Tickets for seniors age 55 and older are $75 for the season, and for students ages 12 to 18 the price is $50.

Advance payments may be made with checks payable to the South Valley Symphony, Inc. and mailed to P.O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021. Subscribers will receive their tickets via mail no later than Sept. 25.

Learn to process digital photos

Gilroy – Want to learn how to make photographs look even better? Digital cameras are changing the face of photography, and this class will show the basic processes of downloading, color correcting, cropping, printing, archiving, e-mailing and much more, The class will focus on Adobe PhotoShop basics, but the techniques can be applied to nearly all photo programs. No camera is needed to attend, but feel free to bring one. Class is taught by James M. Mohs, award-winning chief photographer for the Dispatch.

The class is open to ages 16 and older and will be held from 10am to noon Sept. 17 at the Gilroy Senior Center meeting room. Cost is $30 for Gilroy residents ($35 non-resident).
