VTA offers free rides to evacuees
San Jose – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will provide free rides to victims of Hurricane Katrina who relocate to the Bay Area. In addition to monthly passes for September and October, the VTA will provide transportation between San Jose International Airport and San Jose State University, site of temporary housing.
“As displaced Gulf Coast residents arrive in the Bay Area, VTA will be part of a ring of services that will help set them on a path to recovery,” said VTA General Manager Michael Burns.
New standards for nail salons
Sacramento – The California Assembly has approved a bill to impose new health and safety standards on the state’s salons. In 2004, more than 120 women suffered bacterial infections from pedicures in Santa Clara County salons. If approved by the State Senate and signed into law, AB 1263 would force salons to post conspicuous notices of violations.
“AB 1263 will significantly cut down on the number of infections, but more importantly this bill should give consumers reasonable protection,” said Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, who sponsored the bill.
