GILROY – A local man driving down Uvas Road intentionally backed into a 64-year-old pedestrian Saturday morning after the man yelled at him to slow down, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department.

About five hours later, driver John Davi, 48, of 5215C Croy Road, turned himself in at the sheriff’s headquarters in San Jose. He was booked into county jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run and had posted bail by Monday afternoon.

The victim lives in Livingston, Texas. He was treated for leg and back injuries at Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, deputies reported. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

According to the sheriff’s department report, the victim was walking along Uvas Road at 7:40 a.m. Saturday when Davi drove by him at a high rate of speed in a Ford Bronco sport-utility vehicle. The victim yelled at him to slow down, and Davi, in response, slammed on his brakes so hard they locked, bringing his SUV to a screeching halt that attracted the attention of nearby residents. Davi then put his vehicle into reverse and backed into the older man, knocking him to the ground.

Davi then drove off, but witnesses from the nearby houses gave deputies a description and license plate number of his vehicle.
