Downtown murals to be unveiled
6th Street Studios and Art Center, MANOS and the Gilroy Foundation will unveil two murals on Aug. 18 that were completed during a Youth Mentorship program early this summer.
The murals, located on Railroad Alley between Lewis and Martin streets, were created under the mentorship of Charly Malpass, a Truckee artist who was the latest to participate in 6th Street Studios and Art Center’s artist-in-residence program, and MANOS.
Speakers will start at 5pm, followed by pictures, dancing and activities.
The unveiling will take place during the Third Friday Art Walk in downtown Gilroy.
The Youth Mentorship Program was funded by the Gilroy Foundation.
Help clean up downtown Gilroy
The Downtown Gilroy Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 9am.
The gathering is part of a series of clean-up events city officials have been organizing throughout Gilroy in recent months.
Participants are asked to meet in the Gourmet Parking Lot at 7360 Eigleberry St.
The City will provide trash bags and grabbers. All volunteers will be required to sign a waiver.

City offering disaster training
Gilroy’s Office of Emergency Services is offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, a 20-hour, all-hazard training program that trains volunteers on preparing, organizing and working together as a team.
This course covers disaster preparedness information, including hazards in the area and basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and communications, damage assessment, disaster psychology and disaster medical operations.
The free course is offered in October and will be primarily online, with in-person attendance required for the skills day.

Gilroyan named to Dean’s List at University of Maryland Global Campus
Thomas Weymouth of Gilroy was named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus.
To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.
