Four Gilroy prep track and field athletes are competing unattached (no club or school affiliation) toward possible berths into the Junior Olympics held in Baltimore from July 23 through 29.
The first round toward qualifying for the Junior Olympics took place in Modesto at the Top 12 qualifier over the weekend. Haley Romero placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.52 seconds) in the youth division, which consists of 13 and 14 year olds. She was also the second-place qualifier in the long jump, with a mark of 4.72 meters.
Ally Foster qualified fourth in the Intermediate division (15-16 year olds), posting a 16.57 in the 100 hurdles. She followed that up with a 4.88-meter mark in the long jump to qualify third.
Rachel Allen made it through in two events, qualifying fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5 minutes, 38.88 seconds) and first in the 3,000 (12:04.81.)
Carly McPolin also participated and finished 14th, just out of the running to advance, in the 100 dash.
The next round is the regional qualifier at Tulare High School on July 6-8, where only the top five in California move on to the Junior Olympics.
All four athletes attend Christopher High during the school year.
