GILROY – The 47-team Youth Basketball Program begins the 2004 season Saturday with 22 games played at three sites.
Boys and girls in grades three through 10 will play Saturday games through March 13 in the Gilroy Community Services Department program. Volunteer coaches assist in the popular program.
Wheeler Community Center, with its facilities offering eight-foot baskets, will host the third and fourth grade games for both girls and boys. The girls’ league opens with the Broncos and Rockets at 9 a.m., the Lady Monarchs and Hotshots at 10 a.m. The boys take the floor at 11 a.m., as the Cavaliers and Kings play at 11 a.m. The Cougars and Celtics play the noon tilt, the Raptors and Sonics at 1 p.m., the Gladiators and Warriors at 2 p.m.
The new Solorsano Gymnasium will host 11 games on Opening Day. The Lakers and Blazers of the Boys’ Fifth Grade play at 9 a.m., with the Spurs and Magic at 10 a.m. The Boys 6-7 Grade play at 11 a.m. the Blue Devils taking on the Orange Crush. The Clippers and Knicks play at noon, the Runnin’ Rebels and Suns at 1 p.m.
The Jazz and Sonix of the Girls Fifth Grade take over at 3 p.m. The Sparks and Monarchs play at 4 p.m., the Blazers and Magic at 5 p.m.
The day’s activity concludes with a tripleheader for the Girls’ 6-7 Grades. The Monarchs and Lady Celtics play at 6 p.m., the Sparks and Liberty at 7 p.m., the Spurs and Kings at 8 p.m.
Six games are scheduled Saturday at South Valley Junior High School. The Girls 8-10 Grades open play with the Queens and the Monarchs at 9 a.m., the Sparks and Celtics at 10 a.m. The Boys 8-10 Grades includes the Rockets and Ballerz at 11 a.m., the Eastside Ballerz and Sonics at noon, the Huskers and 76ers at 1 p.m.
