It’s been a mostly quiet week as far as arrests and reported incidents in Gilroy – but with the arrest of one of Gilroy’s most prolific career criminals last weekend, one less wanted man is off the streets. Here are a couple events:
A familiar face to the Gilroy Police Department was arrested at 7 p.m. on Sept. 28, after a member of the Anti-Crime Team recognized a man in the passenger of his girlfriend’s car to be Patrick Caudill, 31, and tried to pull the vehicle over. The driver failed to stop at first, but did stop several blocks down the road at Parish Way and Welburn Avenue. Caudill allegedly refused to obey orders and was acting rambunctious toward police. Police used pepper spray on him, which led him to make threats to the officer. After a Taser was used, police say he continued to resist arrest, but as back-up officers arrived, they successfully handcuffed him and took him to Santa Clara County Jail, according to Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza. He was arrested on five outstanding warrants, including battery against his girlfriend and exhibiting a deadly weapon. He was also arrested that evening for possession of a controlled substance, violation of protective order, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He remains in custody and is due to appear in court Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. for a pretrial hearing.
Terrible time for clocks store
At 4 a.m. on Oct. 2, an unknown suspect broke into the Clocks and Collectibles store at 7573 Monterey Street, stealing an array of collectible marble and wood mantle and wall clocks, valued over $6,200.
Larry Demoss, owner of Clocks and Collectibles said he’s seen a rash of downtown businesses burglarized recently – from Porcella’s Music to Garbo’s Antiques – and is upset that police aren’t patrolling Monterey Street more in the early morning hours.
“I think the police ought to get their head out of the sand and address what’s going on here,” Demoss said.
Sex offender fails to register
Gabriel Lopez, 46, was arrested at 5:12 p.m. on Oct. 2 on Eigleberry Street for a parole violation and for failing to register as a sex offender.
