It was no surprise that the Tri-County Athletic League
all-league volleyball team was loaded with San Benito players.
Gilroy – It was no surprise that the Tri-County Athletic League all-league volleyball team was loaded with San Benito players.
Senior Chelsea Fowles and junior Emily Kortsen shared Most Valuable Player honors. Additionally, Haybalers Bri Romero and Ali Sharp were on the first team.
Kayla Meazell, one of two Gilroy seniors, also garnered all-TCAL first-team honors.
“Hopefully, this will inspire her to continue her volleyball playing beyond high school,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “It says a lot about her abilities not just with me but all coaches in TCAL. She’s a great all-around player. Her defensive improvement came between last year and this year which made her an amazing all-around player.”
Meazell led Gilroy in kills (185), was second in digs (180) and had the most aces (50).
The Mustangs had three girls on the second-team –senior Jennifer Smith, junior Kaitlin Chisholm and junior Michelle Coffin.
Vanessa Wilkins and Sara Hugo were each named honorable mention.
Salinas, which tied San Benito for the TCAL title, placed four girls on the first team – Tori Vaughan, Fabiola Castro, Patricia Iglesia and Sarah Taylor.
Rounding out the first team were Ya Ya Meija of Alisal and Cathy Fraide of Notre Dame.
