MORGAN HILL – Rooms in the brand new community and cultural center, taking shape downtown, have formal names at last. After a discussion worthy of naming a new child, the City Council agreed recently to choose the names reflecting the town’s history and its natural attributes, such as the city’s founder Hiram Morgan Hill and the scenic mountain El Toro.

Naming the rooms will ease confusion for hosts renting an appropriate space and for guests trying to find an event.

“The rooms must have signage before an occupancy permit can be issued,” Jim Ashcraft, director of public works, told the Council. Before signs could be ordered, names had to be chosen.

The center will display its charms to the public during a grand opening celebration Dec. 7-14; the theater, three weeks behind schedule, will have a separate opening in January.

The complex, rising on the corner of Dunne Avenue and Monterey Road, contains a theater building, a classroom structure to be rented by Gavilan College’s Morgan Hill campus, the community building and several outdoor structures.

Gavilan will move into the classroom building after the fall semester and will hold spring semester classes in the new building – beginning on Jan. 21, 2003.

Cost of the center, built with RDA funds, is estimated to be close to $17 million.

To introduce the public to the Community Center’s possibilities, the city will hold a week-long series of parties and events, including a mayor’s ball and days devoted to business, Gavilan College, seniors and youth. Dec. 7-14.
