A Morgan Hill woman who was scheduled to be released Jan. 10, 2010 from a Santa Clara County correctional facility died in custody Friday.

Vanita Doage, 46, complained of chest pains to medical staff at Elmwood Women’s Facility in Milpitas, where she was housed, about 12 p.m. Thursday, according to Department of Correction spokesman Mark Cursi. She was evaluated by the facility’s staff and transported by ambulance to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 12 a.m. Friday.

Doage was serving a sentence for possession of a controlled substance and petty theft, with an unspecified prior conviction, Cursi said. She been in custody at Elmwood or in alternative sentencing programs since April 24.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death is pending an autopsy. Cursi said there was no evidence of foul play.

Doage’s death is reportedly the third in Santa Clara County custody this year.
