Police are reminding residents to be wary of strangers after a man posing as a plumber tried to gain entry to a Morgan Hill home.

About 9 p.m. Sunday, a woman returned alone to her home in the La Crosse area of Morgan Hill. She heard a knock on her front door a few minutes later.

When the woman spoke with the subject through the door, he told her he was responding to a Roto-Rooter service call. After seeing a plain white panel van with the lights on in her driveway, she told the person he had the wrong house. She then called her husband.

The subject left the area driving toward Watsonville Road.

According to Roto-Rooter, they had no service calls in the area at that time and their only plain white van was locked inside their service facility.

Police remind residents to not open their doors to strangers and to ask clarifying questions before letting their guard down around strangers.

“She handled the situation correctly,” Cmdr. David Swing said of the woman. Swing gave examples of identifying information to look for to determine if a person is legit or suspicious. “If someone comes to your home, ask them what type of call they’re responding to, what company they’re with, check for company I.D. or a uniform, ask them who called.”

The woman gave no description of the man, Swing said.

Anyone with information about this incident may call Detective Kevin Beilmann at 779-2101.
