Dear Editor:

Is there a double standard being tolerated by our local government? If a business owner violates a rule, ordinance, regulation, statute or court decree, then the government swiftly jumps all over him. Yet our local government officials tolerate VTA’s violation of the prohibition in the Public Utilities Code against transit agencies operating with taxpayers subsidies higher than 85 percent of operating costs (the subsidy level is greater under generally accepted accounting principles). Public Utilities Code Section 99268.12.

How can we expect business owners to obey our laws if our own government does not obey them? Will our leaders recover these illegal distributions of taxpayers hard-earned dollars? Will they stop their illegal practices? The law punishes unlawful business practices, but what about unlawful government practices? Caveat Viator!
