Southbound lane of Monterey expected to reopen again in
October
Gilroy – The southbound lane of Monterey Street in downtown Gilroy will close today and will not open again until October, when a major overhaul of the street and sidewalks along a two-block stretch is expected to be complete.
The lane closure is required for the installation of new gas lines, according to city officials. The northbound lane of Monterey Street will remain open until the Streetscape project gets fully under way in February.
That project, expected to last 10 months, includes plans to eliminate the winding median in the city’s downtown corridor, widen sidewalks and create new lighting.
In the meantime, the following road closures along Monterey Street will take affect in coming days:
– starting today – southbound Monterey will be closed between Fifth and Sixth streets. The intersection at Fifth and Sixth street will remain open, but southbound traffic will be detoured west on Fifth Street.
– week of Jan. 23 – southbound lane closure will be extended to Fourth Street and the intersection of Fifth and Monterey streets will be closed. Southbound traffic will be detoured west at Fourth Street.
–Â week of Jan. 30 – the southbound lane closure will be extended to Third Street and the intersection of Fifth and Monterey streets will be closed. Southbound traffic will be detoured west at Fourth Street.
When the Streetscape project begins in February, both lanes of Monterey will be closed between Sixth and Fourth streets.
