DEAR EDITOR:

I would like to encourage and remind the citizens of Gilroy to use our city’s excellent recycling program, especially at this time of the year. Cardboard boxes and wrapping paper are recyclable, as well as all plastics numbered 1-7. Don’t forget, styrofoam is recyclable, too.

The extended plastics pickup was offered at the end of the summer, and this means virtually any packaging, from yogurt containers and maple syrup bottles to shampoo bottles are all recyclable as most plastics are numbered 1-7. This act of separating out these containers alone will save your garbage cans from being overloaded.

Also convenient is the mixed paper pickup. You don’t need to separate newspapers from other paper anymore, and keeping a paper bag in your house to collect this paper isn’t a difficult act.

Another bonus is that beverage cartons, such as orange juice, individual juice drink boxes, ice cream cartons and half and half containers are also recyclable.

My family and I appreciate the ease of Gilroy’s recycling program, and again, encourage more people to take advantage of it.

Thank you.
