Both Ogle and Miller set school records in the CCS Finals at
Gilroy High
Gilroy – Two Gilroy High participants, two Gilroy High records.
That’s not a bad way for the Mustangs to conclude the track and field season as they hosted Friday’s Central Coast Section championships.
Freshman Elise Ogle, who hadn’t even planned to run track earlier in the school year, took sixth in the 1,600 meters with a PR and school record time of 5:09.03.
“I didn’t ever think I’d get this far,” Ogle said. “I’m just happy I placed.”
While the focus for many of the athletes on hand was about advancing to next week’s CIF State Championships, Ogle was just looking to gain the experience and build upon that success.
“I have next year,” Ogle said. “I’m really excited. Hopefully I’ll get better each year.”
For the freshman, whose first passion is field hockey, it took some prodding by distance coach Art Silva to get to give it a shot.
“I didn’t even know I was going to run,” Ogle said. “But Mr. Silva told me to just try it out and it worked out.”
Kathleen Miller also delivered a record-breaking performance. The sophomore, who qualified for the state meet in cross country in the fall, finished seventh in the 3,200 and out of state meet consideration, but obliterated the school record by 13 seconds.
Her personal best time of 11:11 was 15 seconds better than her time from the CCS trials last week at San Jose City College.
“I don’t really know how I did it,” Miller said. “I guess it was more aggressive training.”
Miller came into the event feeling good about her chances to break the record, but was floored by the margin by which she broke it.
“I didn’t expect that at all,” Miller said. “Initially I was only trying to get two seconds (off my time).”
Miller kept something in the tank for the finish and a big surge at the end helped her record that time.
“That’s just my personal style,” Miller said of the fast finish.
