While Gilroy track and field head coach Jeff Myers was pleased with his team’s performances at the Wildcatz Relays, he and the other Mustang assistants were dumb-founded by the performance of Jordan Hassay.
Mission Prep didn’t even enter a team in the event in Watsonville and Hassay was a surprise entry. The sophomore from San Luis Obispo, ranked No. 1 in the country in the 2-mile run, ran a sizzling 10:04 on a warm, sunny day. As a comparison, Gilroy’s tandem of Kathleen Miller, Brandie Rodriguez, Christine Bobula and Kristina Schmidt were second as a team in the 2-mile run. Miller had the best time of the foursome in 12:43.52 as the Mustangs finished behind Aptos.
“Amazing,” said GHS distance coach Art Silva, marveling at Hassay’s performance.
All events were based on aggregate scores of threesome (jumping events) and foursome (running events). The Gilroy girls were third each in the high jump and triple jump. Freshman Sarah Unadia cleared 5-0 to lead high jumpers Megan McAvoy and Tylaisha Friend. McAvoy’s 33-3 was a personal best and led triple jumpers Friend and Veronica Grijalva.
The girls 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay teams were both fourth. The 200 team consisted of Unadia, Amanda Krueger, Ariana Vera and Erica Sanchez, and the 400 team had Vera, Krueger, Monica Matthews and Rodriguez. The sprint medley team of Rodriguez, Kassie Kachkaki, Unadia and Matthews was fifth. The medley relay team of Paty Hernandez, Schmidt, Rodriguez and Miller was sixth. The 4 x 100 team of Sanchez, Vera, Krueger and Unadia was fourth in 53.31.
Among the boys, the sprint medley team of Juan Velasquez, Peter Guenther, Javin Charlot and Steven Heisey was fifth in 3:50.79. The 4 x 400 team of Guenther, Charlot, Derek Pesta and Heisey was sixth in 3:46.98.
Two Gilroy athletes had impressive showings in the frosh-soph meet. Dante Fullard long-jumped 19-0 and triple-jumped 40-3 to finish as the top performer in each event. Ramon Gonzales tossed the discus 100-0 and was tops in his specialty.
“We had a lot of different kids doing different events,” Myers said. “I thought they responded well. The competition was good.”
The Mustangs are in Salinas to take on Tri-County Athletic league foe North Salinas at 3:30pm Thursday.
