SALINAS – The most recent victory for Gilroy’s boys volleyball team came easy to the Mustangs (8-0), who used just three sets against Palma Tuesday night as a tune-up for Thursday’s match against rival Hollister.

“We came out and played pretty well, a pretty clean game just in terms of quality of play,” Gilroy coach Scott Martin said.

The Mustangs used a balanced attack to take the match 25-10, 25-11, 25-13.

Renz Campos led Gilroy with a team-high eight kills, while Samuel Howard and Etay Haramaty both had seven.

“[Campos] is pretty much one of our first players coming off the bench,” Martin said. “He stepped up, had his opportunity to play and did very, very well.”

Greg Calimpong handled distribution duties for GHS, finishing with 31 assists, and Nico Sandoval led the Mustangs with seven digs, one more than Campos. Gilroy’s Steven Valdez had three blocks.

While Palma had a collection of good athletes, few are full-time volleyball players, Martin said. San Benito will offer a much stiffer challenge in their 6:30 p.m. contest.

“It’s gonna be a very, very difficult match for us,” Martin said. “They’re going to have good players at every position.

“It’s gonna demand the best out of the team if they want to win.”

Gilroy is currently tied atop the Tri-County Athletic League standings with the Haybalers and Salinas at 3-0.
