Gilroy High’s varsity baseball team couldn’t connect at the plate against Salinas Saturday, and ended up falling short 3-1 at The Washington Baseball Facility in Salinas.

It was the first loss for the team overall (6-5) and in league (5-1) after winning six-straight games.

James Lafuente put together a strong performance on the mound for the Mustangs, tossing 65 pitched in 4.1 innings while striking out three while only allowing two earned runs. Unfortunately for Gilroy, the team couldn’t get anything going offensively.

Catcher Lukas Fortino had the only hit of the game for Gilroy compared to Salinas’ four, but it was centerfielder Danny Contreras that counted for the Mustangs’ lone run. He was hit by a pitch twice in the game and also recorded a stolen base, scoring in the sixth inning as Gilroy already trailed 3-0. Gilroy could add no more runs, though.

Chris Salter came on in relief for Gilroy, pitching 1.2 innings with two walks and one strikeout and no earned runs.

The Mustangs had two errors in the game.

Gilroy High coach Clint Wheeler was unavailable for comment

Salinas moved to 7-3 with the win, 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

Gilroy played against Monta Vista in the Monta Vista-Cupertino Host Lions Easter Tournament Monday, but results were not available as of press time.
