Gilroy High’s varsity baseball team captured its first victory of the season Saturday with a 10-7 win over the Carmel Padres.

Getting contributions from almost everyone on the roster, the Mustangs were led by Kevin Grove and Roberto Celestino, who each had two hits and two RBI. Lukas Fortino (1-3, triple) held down the catching duties for Gilroy while the Mustangs employed the services of five pitchers, with Michael Hartman getting the win.

After scoring two runs in the first inning, Gilroy fell behind by allowing five Carmel runs in the bottom half of the frame. Gilroy regained the lead, 6-5, with three runs in the third and one run in the fourth.

It looked like Gilroy had sealed it with four runs in the top of the seventh, but the Padres crept back by scoring twice in the bottom part of the last inning.

Center fielder Danny Contreras (1-2, two walks, two steals) moved to pitcher in the final inning to help close out the game.
