Frys.com Open a hole in one for economy

For the third year in a row, South County businesses are eager for the boost that the Frys.com Open Golf Tournament will bring this week, where upwards of 60,000 golf fans will gather on the rolling hills on the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, many with expendable green in their wallets.

In honor of Tara: Fundraiser in slain teen’s memory Oct. 20

The new local nonprofit Everyone’s Child will host a fundraiser featuring live entertainment, a car show and vendor booths Oct. 20 to support their goal of creating a public art project depicting the likeness of Tara Romero, a 14-year-old Morgan Hill resident who was murdered in a drive-by shooting Nov. 4, 2011.

Violent attacks around the Garlic Capital

Police responded to several violent incidents over the weekend, involving both strangers and romantic partners. Here are a few events:

Margarita Rivas Hernandez May 16, 1913 – October 6, 2012

She was born May 16, 1913 in San Carlos, Mexico. At three months old, her home became Del Rio, TX.  

Joseph G. McCormack, M.D. September 27, 1917 – June 6, 2012

Joseph G. McCormack, M.D. was born September 27, 1917 in St. Paul, MN. He grew up during the depression, amidst a hard-working Lutheran family who was very thankful for the generosity of the corner grocer. They were given food during the month “on credit”; paying for the bill at the end of the month when they had enough money. Some days, lunch was soda crackers and water.

Karen Sue Cobb November 1, 1952 – September 6, 2012

On September 6, 2012, an Angel was sent from Heaven for Karen Sue Cobb, to join our Lord. Karen passed away at Kindred Hospital in Folsom, CA after a short, difficult illness.

Nellie Moreno August 26, 1944 – October 4, 2012

Nellie Moreno, age 68, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 4, 2012, in Gilroy, CA. She is survived by her loyal husband Angel Moreno of 47 years; her loving children George Moreno, Rosary Moreno, Maggie Moreno, Angel Moreno, Jr. and Gilbert Moreno and her grandson, Samuel Moreno who was the world to her; her brothers and sisters, Frances Orozco, Lupe Astrada, Marina Hernandez, Lisa Machuca and Gilbert Hernandez, Jr. and many adored nieces and nephews.

Henry Estrada Jr. Leon December 26,1966 – October 5, 2012

Our beloved Henry Estrada Jr. Leon, born December 26, 1966 in San Jose, CA, went peacefully on October 5, 2012, surrounded by his wife, two daughters, and son in-law. A devoted family man of two girls and four dogs, Henry was a loving husband, dedicated brother, amazing son, caring father in-law, goofy uncle, precious brother in-law, and thoughtful friend.

SOCCER: Rams notch 1-0 conference win

Fabian Ruiz assisted Anthony Valazquez for the only goal necessary in a Gavlian College men's soccer team victory over Canada College on Friday.
