Artwork by 6-year-old South Bay artist Thanmay Sarath will be on display at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., through Aug. 28, the fifth solo exhibition of his young career. Thanmay started working with crayons when he was 9 months old and moved on to acrylic, oil and pastel.

The art of cursive is being lost
Amidst current discussions and controversy about the merits and challenges of the new “Core Curriculum,” a less dramatic yet equally important issue is the trend away from teaching “cursive” in our schools. As a retired teacher and current voter, genealogist and sports fan, I think the loss of the ability to write (and therefore read) cursive is another step in the increasing “depersonalization” of our culture with potentially disastrous consequences. I was further reminded of this as I went to vote by mail, where, on the envelope, you are told emphatically to sign your name (not print it) for your vote to count.
Community disaster exercise scheduled
The South County Airport Pilot Association Disaster Airlift Response Team will be conducting an intensive emergency response to a mock earthquake on Saturday, April 7.
Organizers said this year’s scenario will simulate a large earthquake occurring at 7:30am with an epicenter near San Martin.
