Latest proposal raises eyebrows

A local parcel tax that could help the Gilroy Unified School District stave off future class size increases and salary cuts has branched into three different options: A flat rate parcel tax, a variable rate parcel tax or a joint city/school sales tax.

Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella’s $42,000 salary raise is under fire again – though this time it’s because a local Latino advocacy group alleges the Gavilan College board violated the Brown Act in an October meeting when they approved increasing his pay from $234,090 to $276,090 by 2015.

Gov. Brown: More funding for schools – if taxes pass

Jerry Brown released a revised state budget Monday aimed at sparing education and public safety from deeper cuts by levying two temporary taxes, while slashing a collective $8.3 billion from “almost every part of government.”

Gavilan students take shot at hospital survey

After Saint Louise Regional Hospital released its results from a recent phone survey asking Gilroy voters if they would be in favor of a sales tax increase – an avenue the hospital is exploring in light of the exponentially growing need for a bigger emergency room – a group of Gavilan College statistics students took interest and conducted their own poll.

This year marked the dinner’s 50th anniversary, making the event especially significant.

Kudos, mustangs! GHS receives six-year accreditation term from WASC

After being thoroughly scrutinized in March by a committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Principal Marco Sanchez found out today that GHS will be given the second highest accreditation term a school can receive. GHS was awarded a six-year accreditation term through 2018, with one mid-term visit in 2015.
