Morgan Hill – No one was injured in a fire in a converted barn in north Morgan Hill Wednesday morning, according to CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Ken McGeever.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears that a space heater next to a mattress may have been the culprit, McGeever said.

The converted barn or storage shed with aluminum siding is partitioned into smaller rooms on the inside, with sheetrock and a ceiling. Several people are believed to be living in the Kalana Drive barn. McGeever said a child was home sick, apparently laying on the mattress, but was not injured when the fire started about 10am.

Only a small portion of the interior of the building was damaged. Residents on scene began spraying the building with water from garden hoses to put out the fire, and when fire crews arrived, the flames had been extinguished.

Smoke filled the inside as officers looked for hot spots in the charred portion of the building.

McGeever said flames did not reach the attic of the building.

The damage to the building was about $10,000 to $20,000, McGeever said.

A large-screen TV in the room was probably damaged by heat, and other personal items were likely damaged by smoke, McGeever said.

Fire crews spent an hour and a half at the scene, McGeever added.
