Morgan Hill – A 19-year-old Gilroy man is in critical condition after a shooting behind the Safeway grocery store in Tennant Station Friday night.

According to Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Joe Sampson, Luis Santos Bautista was shot in the arm, abdomen and buttocks after what appeared to be an argument at approximately 8pm.

Witnesses at the Box Seat bar on Vineyard Boulevard and others in the area reported four men outside moving around, then hearing four shots.

“We’re not sure if it was the argument or what that drew these people outside,” Sampson said. “One of the suspects fled through the back of the Safeway, and one fled in a black pickup after the shooting.”

No weapon was found. Police closed Monterey Road near the scene immediately following the report as they searched for suspects. At presstime, no one had been apprehended.

One of the witnesses took Bautista to St. Louise Medical Center in Gilroy, where his injuries were assessed, Sampson said. He was then flown to Lexington Hospital in east San Jose.

Bautista is not known to the Gilroy police or Morgan Hill Police, Sampson said, and at this point in the investigation, the incident is not believed to be gang related.

“Right now, we’re continuing to investigate the scene, to talk to witnesses, and we have detectives in the hospital in San Jose,” Sampson said. “We’ll continue to gather information and hope the young man pulls through.”
