DEAR EDITOR:

I am writing with regards to the report on Monday February 17, 2003, concerning the Slingerland program. I am really concerned that the school will no longer take any more children. I put blame to the parents of the children, who qualify and do not enroll them. They do not understand what they might be doing to their child’s future and the future of other children.

I am a mother of two students enrolled in Eliot, one in second grade and one in third grade. Both of my children have been going there since the first grade and it has done wonders for them. They get so much extra help in the areas they need. They are not falling in the cracks of education because of Eliot. Now, there might be a high chance that will happen to the children that qualify and do not attend. Those children might end up no longer interested in school at all because of not being able to understand, not being able to grasp the concepts or not getting the extra help they need. As a parent, I would not want that to happen to my children and I am sure other parents feel the same. So why not give them the change? Why not travel that extra mile to drop off and pick up your child? Are we not parents and have to look out for the best interest of our children? That is our job and responsibility. We need to do everything we can to help our children succeed in life.

The reason for this letter is two fold, selfish and concern for the future of our children. Selfish because I have a child entering kinder this year. I would want him tested and enrolled if he needed it, but now that might not happen. That is mostly due to other parents not enrolling their children who need it. Now they might have good reasoning, but the bottom line is what is good for our children. The second selfish reason is I will have two more entering kinder in three and four years from now and I would want them to have the same opportunity.

My concern is the future of our children. Their future is our future and if we do not look out for them who will then?
