The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the pitiful endorsement stance for school trustee taken by the three unions representing Gilroy Unified School District employees. The union leadership apparently wanted to unanimously endorse candidates in the race for the three available GUSD trustee slots. When disagreement reigned, they chose to endorse only one candidate, John Gurich, because “nobody objected.” That’s a sad commentary, indeed – not that Gurich isn’t worthy of endorsement, but that the union leaders chose not to pick two other candidates. Maybe next election, the rank-and-file should vote and the endorsement should be based on that.

CHEERS: For Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia, who stopped in at the Gilroy High football practice to give a little motivational talk to the squad. The Browns have an off week and the former GHS, Gavilan, San Jose State, Calgary and 49ers quarterback is in town for a visit. Taking the time – unannounced – to head over to GHS and talk to the team is vintage Garcia. And hopefully somebody will send a picture of Garcia with his latest girlfriend in tow to Terrell “The Mouth” Owens.

JEERS: For the latest measuring-stick results for the Gilroy Unified School District. Most Gilroy schools did not meet the Academic Performance Index target numbers set by the state. The bright spots were Antonio Del Buono and Eliot schools. ADB did remarkably well. Students posted across-the-board gains of 20-plus points in every segment of student population. The district must look carefully at what drives the ADB success story and make every effort to replicate that in other schools.

CHEERS: For 85-year-old Gilroyan Alice Clewett who has been sewing blankets – up to 120 of them annually – for the homeless for 27 years. Clewett says she feels “blessed” with a good husband and four good children. With a heart like hers, it’s no wonder.

CHEERS: For the regional leaders, spurred on by Gilroy City Manager Jay Baksa and Mayor Al Pinheiro, who came together this week to talk about the two huge Indian land development proposals facing the area. It’s a good start and hopefully the meetings will result in some unified action.
