Burglars take $17,000 from Murray Avenue market

At least two burglars broke into the Quick and Easy Market at 8429 Murray Ave. late Saturday night and stole a safe with more than $17,000 inside.

The unknown burglar cut the lock on the front door in an unknown manner and then hoisted the safe through unknown means into one of two cars captured by security footage, police said. The vehicles were a black pickup truck and a newer model, light blue or silver sedan, possibly a Toyota or Lexus model, with chrome rims and bright white headlights, according to police.

One burglar wore gloves, a tan baseball hat, a black hooded sweatshirt with cloth covering his face, blue jeans and white shoes, police said. The other burglar wore gloves, a black baseball hat, a black hooded sweatshirt with a red logo on the font, blue jeans and black shoes.

The owner reported the theft in the morning, police said. Sgt. Jim Gillio could not say how the thieves removed the safe or if police suspected past or present employees at the market near Leavesley Road and U.S. 101. Aside from $15,000 in U.S. currency, the owner also reported $2,500 worth of Canadian and Indian monies missing, along with valuable keys, gold, passports and checks, according to police.

$20,000 taken from residence

About 11:15 a.m., May 13, a burglar or burglars stole more than $20,000 in U.S. currency and a black powder pistol with a chrome barrel from a residence on West 10th Street. Police declined to say whether the incident was related to a burglary at a Murray Avenue market Saturday.

Police try to stun, arrest man for fighting at Rio Nilo

Police officers chased and tried to stun a man with an electric charge after he ran from El Rio Nilo, 7474 Monterey St., late Sunday night, police said.

Enrique Leyva, 31, got into a fight with a security guard outside the downtown bar near Monterey and Martin streets about 11:51 p.m. Sunday, police said. Staff called 911 and police arrived moments later.

Leyva ran across the street southbound toward Sixth Street when officers arrived. Police saw him holding something in his right hand as he ran and instructed him to stop, but he kept running, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. At least one officer deployed his electronic stun gun from an unknown distance, but the prongs did not extend long enough to penetrate Leyva’s skin. Less than a minute later, though, at least four officers caught up with Leyva behind the Oakwood Lounge near the corner of Sixth and Monterey streets and detained him there, police said.

Police charged Leyva with fighting in public and resisting a peace officer.

Small gang scuffle downtown

A self-declared gang member confronted an unidentified male and punched him near Fifth and Monterey streets during pre-dawn Saturday.

The unknown suspect – a 5’7″ Hispanic male between 20 and 25 years old – told the victim, who was also a young Hispanic male, that he was a Norteño and then hit him in the face once, police said. The suspect fled on foot before officers arrived and is still missing. Police also said the incident did not appear connected to any other recent gang-related incidents.
