GILROY – A 23-year-old man is free on bail after Gilroy police and sheriff’s deputies arrested him Tuesday for allegedly performing a lewd act with a child under the age of 14.
Police charged Jeremy Matthew DeVries with a felony for a sexual act that allegedly took place in the second half of 2002, according to Gilroy police Detective Wes Stanford, who specializes in investigating sex crime cases. Stanford declined to reveal the alleged victim’s name, age, gender or place of residence.
Gilroy police took the report some time ago and investigated the case then, Stanford said, but the district attorney’s office had questions. These have since been answered, Stanford said, and a judge signed a warrant for DeVries’ arrest Jan. 22.
On Tuesday, Gilroy police and sheriff’s deputies initially looked for DeVries at his home, at 5059 Little Uvas Road, west of Morgan Hill. When they did not find him there, they went to his workplace at the intersection of Monterey Road and East Dunne Avenue, where they arrested him at 6:30 p.m. as he was getting into his vehicle.
DeVries spent the night in jail at the Gilroy police station and posted $50,000 bail there the next morning, according to Stanford and the county Department of Corrections. He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Feb. 10.
