GILROY – A 17-year-old girl is fighting for life in a San Jose hospital, and the 34-year-old boyfriend suspected of stabbing her may be fleeing for his native Mexico, city police say.
Police detective Dan Zen has sent a wanted poster for Delfino Javier Jimenez to the U.S. Border Patrol and all California law-enforcement agencies, he said Tuesday.
On the other hand, Jimenez may still be in this area. Police said he fled the house on foot and is not known to own a vehicle.
Meanwhile, Anna Maria Gonzales Jael, whom Jimenez lived with in a rented room at 133A Martin St., remained in critical condition at a San Jose hospital at midday Tuesday, according to Zen.
Housemates said Jimenez stabbed Gonzales Jael in a fit of jealousy after he heard she had gone out with another man Saturday night. The couple were in their small bedroom at the time.
Police responded to a
9-1-1 call just after 9 p.m. Sunday and found Gonzales Jael in the house with several stab wounds in her abdomen.
Jimenez was nowhere to be found, but police found a knife they believe he used to stab his girlfriend, Zen said.
An air ambulance flew Gonzales Jael to a San Jose trauma center.
At present, police are treating this as a case of attempted murder. If Gonzales Jael dies, Jimenez may face a murder charge, Zen said.
Housemate Serafin Urias was home at the time and heard the couple fighting but did not know exactly what happened, according to housemate Maria Zavaleta. Gonzales Jael was still incapable of speech as of late Tuesday morning, so police were unable to question her about the incident, Zen said.
Both Jimenez and Gonzales Jael are natives of Mexico, according to Zen. Police believe they may not have been in the U.S. for very long.
“I think he’s been here (in the U.S.) on and off for years,” Zen said. “With her, I don’t know because we can’t find any family.”
Jimenez, however, has a brother and two or three uncles in Gilroy, according to Zen.
Gonzales Jael never attended school in Gilroy and was employed by a Gilroy nursery, Zen and housemates said. Jimenez did not work. He was disabled from falling off a ladder in the past, his uncle reportedly told Zen.
“He walks with a limp, evidently,” Zen said.
Zen said Jimenez has no criminal history that city police know of.
