GILROY – A robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money when he robbed Gilroy’s Monterey Bay Bank branch Saturday.
The suspect entered the bank located at 805 First St. at about 12:17 p.m. He was wearing a dark ball cap and no mask, according to police.
The man then showed the bank teller a note demanding money. The teller gave the man all of the money in her cash drawer, and the man quickly fled the bank, police said.
The suspect is described as a white male in his early to mid-20s, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, thin built with blond hair and clean shaven. The man was wearing a dark-colored, thin cotton jacket and dark-colored pants.
It is unknown whether he had a weapon. “The clerk was probably just following policy – whether the guy had a gun or not – because a lot of banks have the policy to give a robber money when they ask for it,” said the Gilroy Police Department’s Sgt. Kurt Svardal. “This is the right thing to do because there’s no reason to put people in jeopardy.”
Svardal said the teller saw the man exit the bank, but did not see how he fled the area.
The robbery is the fourth of a Gilroy bank since January 2002, according the GPD, but Svardal said the police department is not concerned that Saturday’s incident will become a trend.
“Bank robberies happen, but they are not too common around here,” he said. “We always have officers on patrol near banks, but this incident will not cause us to necessarily spend more time sitting and watching the banks.”
Monterey Bay Bank will now likely review video recordings in an attempt to identify Saturday’s suspect, Svardal said.
